Helena Woulfe Palmer has put the horrors of the Monmouth Rebellion behind her and looks forward to life as the wife of Guy Palmer. But her brother, Aaron is in Holland with the Prince of Orange, and surely what he plans is treason? Her younger brother, Henry, carries his own sorrow, pining for his employer’s daughter, whose parents arranged her marriage to someone else.

When Prince William arrives in England to re-establish the Anglican Church there are those who are uneasy as to which side to take. When anti Catholic riots break out in London, Helena is forced to flee from her home – again.

Helena has respectability and security, but the discovery of her husband’s weakness drives her into an unwise liaison and she learns there is a price to pay for recklessness and keeping secrets. Will Helena be able to keep what is important to her and above all, will the three Woulfe siblings ever learn the fate of their missing father?
